I've been hands-on at the leading edge of applied AI and machine learning for over a decade, from deep learning on sports video to always-on agents that carry a real workload today.

AI agents as teammates

Helped train and direct always-on agents that function as working members of a software team — shaping their rules, scope, and quality bar alongside the engineers who built them: a QA agent running browser automation suites against a persistent test registry with cost reporting and performance baselines; a support agent triaging tickets and drafting stories under a hard rule separating the customer's words from the AI's analysis; and a coding agent producing changes and reviewing human pull requests.

Machine learning in real products

Led an R&D organization of 10–20 scientists and engineers applying deep learning, neural networks, and computer vision to elite sports analytics — including intelligent edge cameras generating data from live video, large-scale training pipelines, and multivariate analytics tools used by professional clubs.

AI-first delivery

Currently operating as a full-stack development team of one in a CTO role, using AI across requirements, architecture, prototyping, implementation, and QA — output that would conventionally take a multi-person team. Before that, moved an entire consultancy's SDLC from AI experiments to standard practice in discovery, estimation, prototyping, and testing.

Commodity risk & OTC derivatives platform

A web platform sitting at the center of how a commodity risk management firm onboards clients, structures hedging relationships for agricultural producers, and keeps its book aligned with real positions, cash, and obligations. Not a customer portal — an operations platform where a mistake in data or timing flows straight into margin, settlement, and regulatory documentation.

Scope covered the full relationship arc: counterparty records, configurable products and contracts, trade workflows from draft through confirmation with full change history, and contract lifecycle management across dozens of agreement and operational forms with approval routing and electronic signature. Nightly processing applied daily settlement data, refreshed mark-to-market valuations across swap, option, and average-price structures, and pulled margin requirements used to monitor exposure — all respecting exchange calendars and business-day rules across venues.

The reporting layer was purpose-built for control: collateral and position analytics, reconciliation against external clearing and broker feeds, counterparty balance and cash reporting, commission tracking, and audit-friendly logs on every trade and document. I owned product direction through the multi-year build, and today serve as the firm's contract CTO.

Livestock marketplace with live auction engine

A multi-tenant platform powering an online livestock marketplace and true live auction experience. Each customer organization gets a fully partitioned environment — branded theming, custom domains, feature flags, and isolated data — spanning the whole commercial lifecycle from listing creation through real-time bidding to the back-office reports finance and operations depend on.

Two flagship experiences anchored the product: a search-driven marketplace with a multi-step listing wizard, media uploads, saved searches, and map browsing; and a live sale room where bids are broadcast to every connected participant in real time, with lot-by-lot progression, finished-lot recaps, and post-sale settlement records. Around them sat messaging, presence, announcements, and purchase history.

Tenants self-serviced their own payment onboarding, email deliverability, and SMS activation; a system-admin layer above managed tenants, pricing grids, and impersonation. As product owner I defined the workflows and data model, prioritized across buyer, seller, and admin surfaces, and drove the unglamorous requirements a serious marketplace needs — consent management, audit trails, two-factor authentication, and end-to-end test coverage of the auction flow.

Regulated direct-to-consumer commerce at scale

Product direction for a large direct-to-consumer commerce program in a highly regulated retail category, where buying online is not as simple as "add to cart." The work spanned discovery and merchandising through checkout, post-purchase support, and ongoing engagement — while keeping catalog, pricing, and inventory trustworthy as orders flowed into downstream business systems.

On the money-and-movement side: payment acceptance, tax calculation and compliance reporting, shipping logic, and multi-provider address verification to cut failed deliveries and support load. Scheduled processing kept the digital shelf aligned with enterprise sources of truth, synchronized customers and orders with an ERP system of record, and used queue-based processing so spikes and retries never put the business out of sync with finance and fulfillment.

Adjacent programs in the same ecosystem included a rebate and rewards platform that replaced a paper mail-in process with a guided mobile submission using image recognition and barcode scanning to read receipts and match products, and an internal support operations workspace with ticketing, CRM-adjacent account management, and a governed knowledge base.

Logistics operations, settlements, and driver pay

Enterprise operations platforms for transportation businesses — bringing fleet, people, customers, and money into one system of record instead of disconnected spreadsheets and vendor portals. Many user types, long workflows, and a surface area where a small configuration mistake ripples into billing and pay.

The hardest slice was commercial rules and money movement: layered lane-based pay and customer charges, minimums, fuel adjustments, and add-on fees applied consistently across many clients and scenarios, then carried into settlement workflows — assembling loads and charges, reviewing batches, handling expenses and deductions, and reconciling imported fleet-card spend. Accuracy, auditability, and timing mattered as much as the interface, because finance had to defend and reproduce every number.

Around that sat driver and vehicle intelligence reconciled from multiple telematics and hours-of-service feeds, dispatch and planning views, trailer and tank-wash operations, and reporting paths for both internal analytics and shipper-facing transparency.

Banking compliance education commerce

Product ownership for a compliance training platform selling professional education to financial institutions — a full storefront plus a deep admin operations area used by the business every day. Because the buyers are institutions rather than consumers, the experience had to support complex buying paths, organization-level purchases, and long-term relationships.

One catalog covered live online sessions, in-person programs, reference manuals, ongoing publications, member forums, and bundles, with accounts, cart and checkout, subscription tiers and renewals, and the operational steps that ensure buyers actually receive what they paid for — including coordination with live event delivery, mixed carts, and upgrades.

The hardest product work was orchestration: keeping website, CRM, marketing automation, payments and invoicing, and event registration aligned so a sale in one place didn't create duplicate contacts, broken enrollments, or billing surprises — most of it running through scheduled and queued background processing so the storefront stayed fast.

Computer vision and ML for elite sports

As Product Director I led an R&D organization of 10–20 scientists and engineers making disruptive product bets in sports analytics: owning team structure, process, and prioritization, and taking ideas from market discovery and user research through MVP to validate product-market fit before committing full engineering investment.

The technical core was emerging AI sponsored into production — deep learning, neural networks, and computer vision applied to video and data at large scale, including intelligent edge cameras that captured video and generated structured data in real time, training pipelines feeding the models, and multivariate analytics tools used by professional clubs.

A recurring part of the role was translation: presenting research outcomes and roadmap direction company-wide, turning technical capability into commercial opportunity for executive and non-technical audiences.

I'm based in Lincoln, Nebraska, and I've spent my whole career here — insurance, sports technology, custom software consulting, and now agricultural commodity risk. Long enough to have seen which technology bets paid off and which ones quietly cost a decade.

Most of my work has been in regulated or compliance-heavy industries: financial services, insurance, banking compliance, commodity risk. Governance and architectural consistency aren't a drag on delivery in my experience — they're what makes delivery trusted.

What size engagements work best?

Typically one to three days a week on a retainer, or a fixed-scope assessment for due diligence and delivery reviews. I'm also open to the right full-time senior leadership role.
